As you age, people notice that they are growing less hair, especially on the head. The rate of growth slows down greatly or even becomes a net negative. This time, hair starts to disappear. You may think that this only happens to people at their middle or later ages, but that is no longer the case.

Research has shown that people of younger age groups now experience balding. Also, people may think that this is just a problem confronting the male population; but that is also no longer universally true. It is fast becoming a female phenomenon as well.

All of these are due to the medical condition known as alopecia areata, otherwise known as gradual baldness. There are several cures to this, but one very effective one is a hair transplant.

What Is Hair Transplant?

Essentially, a hair transplant refers to a minor surgery that entails removing hair follicles from a section of the body that is hairy to another part of the body, which is balding. The portion of the body from which the hair is taken is called the “donor site.” On the other hand, the balding part of the body to which the hair follicles are transferred is called the “recipient site.”

The hair follicles usually used are the ones that are generally resistant to balding, for instance, the ones from the back of the head. Hair transplant can be used to cure different types of balding heads and be applied to all body parts. Although the scalp is usually the most commonplace in need of the surgery, hair transplant can also be used for places such as beards, chest, eyebrow, amongst others.

After the surgery is completed, then begins the process for the hair to grow once again. This process usually happens in stages known as the Evolution Stages. It is important that you be aware of these stages and the processes involved before you embark on hair transplant surgery.

This is because improper handling of the location of the transplant can lead to undesirable outcomes. Knowing this will also help you be prepared and know exactly what to expect in weeks and months following the transplant.

The Evolution Stages

As we mentioned earlier, this refers to the periods immediately following the hair transplant.

The way this process turns out usually differs from person to person. However, there are common patterns that do recur and are quite popular with most people. These are what are summarised below. Thus, you may not expect to see exactly the same results in your case, but what you experience will bear a lot of similarities to this.

Furthermore, there are no scientific-based evolution stages. However, here we have come up with some of the simplest step-by-step processes for you to follow, post-op:

The First Two Weeks Post-transplant

The period immediately following the transplant is the most important; and your actions or missteps can either enhance or damage the hair transplant process. There will be some appearances of blood as an aftermath of the surgery. There may even be some hair shedding. During these times, the surgical area will be very sensitive, and it is important that you observe some precautionary measures. For one, you must avoid touching the hair for these first two weeks.

Agreed! This is very difficult. But it is also very necessary. In fact, it may be necessary for you to sleep in an elevated position for the first five nights following the surgery. However uncomfortable, these instructions are important to realize the goal of the hair transplant. In these early periods, the areas upon which the surgery was done will be fragile; in fact, hair may start to fall.

However, after the initial stages (especially after the first week), they will have gathered enough strength. From now on, you can start your post-surgical washing procedure. The hair surgeon will give you lists of products to use.

We should add that during these first few weeks, you should avoid taking a thorough shower. Also, you should not engage in rigorous physical activity such as exercises.

The Next Two (2) Weeks

This will typically start roughly 15 days after the surgical procedure and last up to 30 days post-surgery. By this time, the scalp will have to start to take shape; the previous appearance will appear. The redness and soreness would have greatly reduced, if not removed completely. Furthermore, the hair graft will have regained a lot of strength; thus, it will no longer be susceptible to falling off.

For hair care, you can gradually return to your previous hair care routine. This may involve you using shampoo, but we advise that you do this sparingly. This is because, although the surgical area is much healed, it will take some time for it to be able to withstand chemical hair care products. You can also start washing. Do not do this very often.

A Month To Three Months

This is what we may refer to as the period of consolidation. After the first 30 days, most of the healing process would have been done. It is after this that the gains of the hair transplant start to take shape.

We have to warn that further shedding of the hair may still occur around this time; but be rest assured, it is no cause for any alarm. It is just another natural phase in your process of getting healthier and fuller hair.

We should note that the way this period turns out differs from person to person. For some people, they don’t experience any form of hair growth for many months after. However, for others, they start to see tremendous growth just after (or even before) the first 30 days elapses.

Three To Six Months

We can say this is when the purpose of the hair transplant is realized. The rate at which your hair grows will accelerate noticeably at this point.

Some patients may experience super-fast growth, while others will be gradual or slow at best. As we have always noted, this is normal.

For care, you can now switch back fully to your former hair care process. However, ensure the chemical substances you use are not damaging to brittle hair.

Six To Twelve Months

We can say that the real post-surgery process ends after 6 months, but that is not always the case for everyone. We still have those whose process lingers for a bit longer.

Generally, what happens here is that full-scale hair growth launches.

Hair is one of the primary beauty points; however, it may experience problems such as balding due to old age and other factors. Most times, this gives a not-so-good-looking appearance; but it can be fixed. The hair transplant process is one such effective way to do so

Above, we have discussed the best measures to observe post-transplant.
